Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said scammers posing as an investment firm’s team targeted her Sept. 28, four days after attackers stole about $387.5 million from the crypto exchange. The impostors knew Chen was communicating with outside partners and seeking help after the breach. They assembled several people to play different roles and nearly began a legitimate conversation with Bitget, Chen said. Chen caught the ruse by contacting the investment firm’s leader through a separate channel. She did not identify the firm. Chen characterized the attempt as social engineering directed at her rather than a hack. When asked whether North Korean hackers or ordinary scammers were responsible, she said both possibilities could apply. The approach followed the attack described in [Bitget’s account of a third-party security flaw](). Chen said attackers exploited a previously unknown flaw in an outside vendor’s security product, reached an internal management system and sent fake withdrawal commands to Bitget’s wallets. Bitget plans to publish an incident report on the breach. Chen also said an earlier assessment that the attack was consistent with techniques used by North Korea-linked groups relied on preliminary indicators and should not be treated as definitive attribution. Chen warned crypto companies that attackers study public figures and impersonate people those figures are likely to contact.
