Cosmos Labs’ Tokenization Suite can connect banks’ existing core ledgers and bank-issued tokenized-deposit systems with Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger, giving institutions a path to 24/7 cross-border payments without replacing their current settlement infrastructure.

The system supports Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and Hyperledger Besu environments, including the Hyperledger Besu environment powering Swift’s ledger. It can also connect with Canton, Partior, Ethereum and Solana.

Banks can use the suite to create tokenized-deposit ledgers and synchronize them with systems from Fiserv, FIS, Jack Henry, Temenos and Hogan. Tokenized deposits are digital representations of commercial bank money issued by banks and remain liabilities on the issuing institutions’ balance sheets.

Swift’s shared ledger is designed to coordinate payment movements involving tokenized deposits around the clock. Deposits remain on issuing banks’ ledgers while the shared ledger coordinates payment obligations and transaction flows. Final settlement can continue through existing systems such as real-time gross settlement systems.

The ledger has been developed with more than 40 financial institutions globally, with 17 first-mover institutions piloting tokenized-deposit transactions. The system is intended to support real-time treasury management, instant cash sweeps and programmable money flows.

“For our clients, this is about helping them connect their core ledger to external networks via their existing infrastructure and relationships,” said Maghnus Mareneck, co-CEO of Cosmos. “Banks need to offer customers 24/7 payments and real-time treasury experiences. Cosmos offers the connectivity to make that possible across counterparties, starting now.”

The shared ledger is intended to organize transaction order, apply automated conditions and connect with both established and newer networks. The Cosmos system provides connectivity between bank infrastructure and those networks.
