> Two malicious proposals sought control of Marinade’s governance and treasury, but both were rejected before execution.

Marinade Finance blocked an attempted takeover of its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) on Sept. 25 without losing treasury funds or disrupting its staking services.

An attacker exploited a flaw in the DAO’s voting procedure to make a small amount of Marinade (MNDE) tokens count as substantially more voting power than they actually represented. The attacker then submitted two malicious proposals.

One proposal used a forged “MIP-23” document to seek changes to the voting process. The other sought to move assets from the DAO treasury. MNDE holders’ legitimate voting power exceeded the combined support for both proposals.

The DAO committee rejected the proposals within six hours, roughly four days before their scheduled execution. No funds were transferred, and Marinade’s mSOL liquid-staking token, Native Staking service and SAM service were not affected.

Marinade has patched the voting-procedure vulnerability. The incident underscores the role of governance controls in protecting decentralized protocols, where proposal votes can authorize changes to software or treasury assets.
