Google’s first Project Suncatcher satellite reached orbit and contacted its team after launching Oct. 1, beginning research into whether space-based hardware could eventually support AI computing.

The satellite will collect data on how its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) withstand radiation, temperature extremes and other physical stresses of spaceflight. The mission has not demonstrated TPUs completing AI workloads in orbit.

The prototype flew on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. It is an early hardware test, not an operational orbital data center.

Project Suncatcher explores whether networks of solar-powered satellites could eventually support machine-learning workloads. One proposed design links satellites through optical communications, but the current prototype has not been described as providing that capability.

The research also examines heat management in a vacuum, where there is no airflow. Solar panels in a suitable low-Earth orbit could produce up to eight times more power than on Earth, a projection rather than a result demonstrated by this launch.

A further milestone is planned for 2027.
