> The exploit created about 36.9 million counterfeit ZANO and 1.8 trillion Freedom Dollar (fUSD) tokens that could move like genuine assets.

Zano chose to roll back about a month of blockchain history after a Gateway Address flaw enabled counterfeit tokens to circulate as if they were genuine, a move that also erases legitimate transactions from the affected period.

The exploit created about 36.9 million counterfeit ZANO and 1.8 trillion Freedom Dollar (fUSD) tokens. The first mint occurred Aug. 29. A second ZANO mint occurred Sept. 25, followed by the fUSD mint.

The counterfeit tokens could be transferred and spent like genuine tokens, making it impossible for the team to identify and remove them individually from the chain. The rollback removes the illicit supply but also affects users whose valid transactions occurred during the month being rewound.

Affected users’ balances will be restored using the developer fund, team members’ personal funds and pledged outside donations. Exchanges will replay withdrawals that were reversed, while the team will replace affected deposits.

The incident involved ZANO, the project’s native token, and fUSD, a stablecoin on the Zano network. The Gateway Address mechanism was exploited to bypass minting limits.
