THORChain co-founder Chad Barraford says node approval determines whether most network changes take effect, making control over the protocol’s rules central to how its decentralization is assessed.

In an Aug. 11, 2026, essay, Barraford wrote that developers can propose code changes but cannot compel the network to adopt them. Most code updates and governance proposals require support from two-thirds of nodes.

The essay does not claim THORChain is more decentralized than Bitcoin or Ethereum. It frames decentralization as a question of control across a network, including who can propose changes and who can approve them.

THORChain’s security design also lets an individual node pause trading for up to 720 blocks, approximately one hour. A halt called by another node extends the pause by 720 blocks.

The approval threshold and the individual halt mechanism describe different kinds of control: collective support is needed for most updates, while a single node can temporarily interrupt trading.
