> A usage test found the Claude Max 20x plan offered 5.6 times the estimated API value of ChatGPT Pro 200 when focused on their everyday-use models.

A usage test estimated that Anthropic’s $200-a-month Claude Max 20x plan offered far more API-equivalent value than OpenAI’s $200 ChatGPT Pro plan when each allowance was assigned to its main everyday-use model.

Using its full allowance for Claude Opus 5.5, the Claude plan had an estimated API-equivalent value of $11,726. ChatGPT Pro 200 had an estimated value of $2,084 when used with GPT-6.1 Sol, a 5.6-fold difference.

The figures represent what the subscription allowances would cost at listed API prices, not what customers paid or the companies’ actual costs. The comparison also used a specific model mix and agent-style workload, in which artificial intelligence systems complete multistep tasks.

At the flagship level, the difference was narrower. GPT-6 Astra had an estimated API-equivalent value of $2,897 under ChatGPT Pro 200, while Claude Fable 5.1 had an estimated value of $2,485 under Max 20x. Fable used about half of the available Claude allowance, leaving the rest available for other models.

The test separately measured new input, cache-write, cache-read and output tokens. It then tracked token consumption as each plan’s usage meter changed, reporting results after the measurement error fell within plus or minus 5%.

The workload used a September usage mix in which cache-read tokens accounted for 96.6% of measured usage. Token totals provided another comparison: Claude Max 20x supported about 28.6 billion monthly tokens for Opus 5.5, versus 10.2 billion for GPT-6.1 Sol. Because API prices vary by model, token volume and API-equivalent value measure different things.

OpenAI reduced the allowances on its $200 plan Sept. 29. The estimated API-equivalent value of Astra usage fell from $5,734 to $2,897, while Sol’s value dropped from $5,904 to $2,084. Sol’s reduction was deeper because its cache-read price also fell without a matching increase in the subscription allowance.

OpenAI’s $500 plan cost 150% more than the previous $200 plan but provided 21% more Astra usage. After the changes, the Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 plans offered the same number of tokens per dollar in the comparison.

The analysis also estimated that Anthropic subscriptions represented about 10% of revenue while using 41.7% of inference capacity. Those figures, along with projections of negative gross margins for fully consumed Opus 5.5 usage, are estimates rather than disclosed financial results.
