> The balance stood at about 4.91 million ZEC on Sept. 24. Zcash’s Ironwood upgrade added a new shielded pool in July.

About 4.94 million Zcash (ZEC) was held in shielded pools on Oct. 5, highlighting the scale of funds using Zcash’s privacy system as the network expands its transaction infrastructure.

The balance rose from about 4.91 million ZEC on Sept. 24. The figure measures ZEC held inside shielded pools and does not show the number of users, transaction volume or whether all funds are actively being used.

Zcash supports transparent transactions, whose activity can be viewed publicly, and shielded transactions that use zero-knowledge cryptography to conceal transaction participants and amounts from public observers.

Ironwood NU6.3 activated on Zcash mainnet July 28 at block height 3,428,143. The upgrade introduced a new shielded pool and restricted the older Orchard pool. Funds in Orchard move through a turnstile into Ironwood.

The upgrade followed the discovery of an Orchard soundness vulnerability in late May. The vulnerability was patched. Ironwood’s supply-integrity proofs contain more than 2,700 theorems, supporting verification of the network’s circulating supply while preserving shielded transfers.

Grayscale’s Zcash investment product, ZCSH, began trading on NYSE Arca on Aug. 25. ZCSH is designed to track the value of the trust’s ZEC holdings after deducting its expenses and liabilities.
