A logistics error sent parts from the F-35 stealth fighter to Hong Kong, prompting investigations into US defense shipments and export-control compliance.

The shipment included a cockpit canopy and weapons-bay doors coated with radar-absorbing material. The parts were intended to move through South Korea and Taiwan before reaching San Francisco, but the route was changed after delivery delays.

The US Defense Department and the State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls are investigating the incident. Members of Congress have also called for a broader review of the global supply chain used to move military equipment.

The parts were treated as unserviceable repair items, limiting their immediate operational value. Their transfer to Hong Kong has nevertheless raised concerns about access to physical components that could help outside parties study US military technology.

Lockheed Martin, the F-35 developer, is working with logistics partners on measures to strengthen oversight. The government investigations and congressional supply-chain review are the next steps in assessing how the shipment was rerouted and whether export-control procedures were breached.
