> The simulated proof of concept linked a bank app, Toss and merchant terminals without using real customers, transactions or assets.

Gwangju Bank and South Korean fintech company Toss completed a stablecoin QR-payment test that connected a bank app, a consumer payments application and merchant terminals in a simulated workflow.

The proof of concept linked Gwangju Bank’s mobile app, the Toss app and Toss Place merchant terminals. The test simulated a user selecting stablecoin payment in the bank app, moving to Toss’s QR scanner, scanning a merchant terminal’s QR code and viewing the result again in the bank app.

The payment design transferred stablecoins directly to a merchant wallet. Payment and settlement were confirmed after the transfer was completed.

Gwangju Bank announced the test Oct. 7 at 8:40 p.m. ET (Oct. 8 at 00:40 UTC), corresponding to Oct. 8 at 9:40 a.m. Korea Standard Time.

The trial used virtual merchants in an environment separate from commercial services. It involved no real customers, customer information, merchant transactions or assets. The companies did not identify the stablecoin used in the test or specify which stablecoins a future service might support.

“The PoC with Toss established a technical foundation to proactively respond to the digital-asset payment environment and was meaningful in confirming the user experience from the customer’s perspective,” Gwangju Bank Vice President Byun Mi-kyung said.

A Toss representative said the test showed that payments initiated in a bank app could continue at offline stores. Toss will continue technology testing in payment infrastructure while complying with regulations, the representative said.

The companies are preparing a second technical test focused on reducing the number of steps required from users. They are also discussing trials with actual merchants in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, without announcing a schedule.

South Korea’s Financial Services Commission said in January that major elements of the country’s second-stage digital-asset legislation, including stablecoin issuance rules, had not been finalized. A September policy roadmap identified stablecoin-linked on-chain payment infrastructure as a later-stage objective subject to legislation.

The project demonstrated an integrated payment workflow rather than a public commercial product. It follows Toss’s planned Korean won-backed stablecoin proof of concept using the OP Stack. No commercial launch date, merchant rollout date or regulatory approval has been announced for the Gwangju Bank-Toss payment system.
