> The operations used AI-generated content and fabricated front organizations, including one linked to Latin America influence activity.

OpenAI disclosed two covert influence operations that used artificial intelligence to create fake identities and distribute content, showing how AI is expanding the scale and reach of disinformation campaigns.

The operations combined OpenAI models with traditional tactics to build fabricated front organizations, produce material and circulate it through real media channels. OpenAI said the activity did not change the basic structure of influence operations but improved their scale, efficiency, language capabilities and content production.

One Russian-related operation, called Dark Clark, controlled a fabricated think tank named the Social Research Center. The group appears to have used ChatGPT to prepare internal reports and generate content for influence activity in Latin America.

OpenAI classified Dark Clark at Level 5 on its IO Breakout Scale. It was the first operation in the company’s disclosures to reach that level.

The cases add to concerns for technology platforms and markets as fabricated identities and AI-generated material become easier to produce and distribute. OpenAI said it blocked both groups from using its models.
