> QS PowerBlock targets 800VDC systems and 1-megawatt racks, with testing and modeled configurations showing four times the power density and five times the runtime of Open Rack V3 benchmarks.

QuantumScape has introduced a modular battery reference design aimed at the fast-growing power demands of artificial intelligence data centers.

The company said Oct. 8 that its QS PowerBlock uses solid-state lithium-metal battery technology and is designed for in-rack energy storage in 800VDC systems. QuantumScape said the design can support next-generation data-center racks rated at 1 megawatt.

In a demonstration based on an expected data-center training workload, the company said QS PowerBlock delivered four times the power density and five times the runtime of benchmarks tied to the Open Compute Project’s Open Rack V3 specification.

QuantumScape also highlighted safety performance. Its cells demonstrated thermal stability well over 300°C in third-party and customer testing, compared with approximately 180°C, where conventional lithium-ion cells typically enter catastrophic thermal runaway, the company said.

QS PowerBlock is adaptable across module, shelf and rack formats. QuantumScape plans to display the design at the Open Compute Project’s Global Summit in San Jose from Oct. 12–15, at a booth hosted by Megmeet.

QuantumScape has joined the Open Compute Project.

QuantumScape cautioned that the reported results came from prototype testing and modeled system configurations under controlled conditions. Final performance will depend on product design, system configuration and real-world operating conditions, leaving commercial deployment and customer adoption unresolved.
