> The company is developing a lighter version for existing APUs while building support into new product families, but specific devices have not been named.

AMD plans to expand its FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 technology to APUs, gaming laptops and handheld devices by the end of 2026, broadening a machine-learning upscaling system first introduced for Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards.

Jack Huynh, AMD senior vice president and general manager of the Computing and Graphics Group, outlined the expansion Oct. 7 in Seoul. The plan covers two paths: adapting FSR 4 for existing APUs and integrating support into new product families.

AMD has developed a lighter FSR 4 model for APU environments, with the design focused on maintaining image quality and reducing latency. The company has not identified which existing APUs or handheld devices will receive the technology.

FSR allows games to render at a lower internal resolution before reconstructing a higher-resolution image. That process can improve performance while preserving visual detail. FSR 4 uses machine learning and the hardware-accelerated FP8 capability of AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture.

AMD initially introduced FSR 4 as a feature exclusive to Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards. The technology supports games built for FSR 3.1 and is designed to preserve detail, improve temporal stability and reduce ghosting.

Support for existing handheld-class APUs remains unconfirmed. AMD has not specified whether the lighter model will work with current handheld systems, whether support will be limited to newer chips or whether it will include every FSR 4 capability, such as frame generation or ray reconstruction.

David McAfee, AMD corporate vice president and general manager of Client, said in June that the company needed enough computing capacity in a handheld-class product to preserve the intended performance benefit and quality. His comments came before Huynh described the broader expansion plan.

AMD has not provided a release date more specific than the end of 2026. It also has not named the first handhelds or APUs scheduled to receive FSR 4 support.
