Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi proposed a recovery system for blockchain networks after warning that moving assets to fresh addresses would provide only temporary protection if artificial intelligence broke cryptographic signatures.

Qureshi said coins moved to new addresses would remain protected only until they were transferred again. He added that the assets could become worthless if other coins were hacked and mass-sold.

His proposal, called “Cryptographic Recovery Mode,” would let users link a hash-based backup signature to their blockchain addresses. Validators could then force recovery if the primary cryptographic signatures were broken.

The proposal followed an Oct. 7 warning from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake that advances in artificial intelligence could cause the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm, or ECDSA, to fail “in months, not years” in a worst-case scenario. Drake urged users to consider gradually moving funds to wallets whose public keys had not been exposed.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin agreed that the industry should take AI-accelerated mathematics seriously but did not recommend that users rush to move their funds. No cryptographic break has occurred, making the scenario a prospective security concern rather than an active attack.
