Petra Power is targeting data centers and the Defense Department with solid oxide fuel cells that convert fuels such as natural gas into electricity without combustion, with first deployments planned for 2028.

The company sells the ceramic systems as a smaller and potentially more efficient alternative to conventional power generation. Petra Power founder Aaron Goodman said the technology can reduce fuel costs, emissions and physical footprint because it avoids several conversion stages used in combustion-based systems.

“Combustion takes fuel and creates explosions,” Goodman said. “Those explosions create heat. That heat creates motion. The motion powers an electromotive force, which eventually creates electricity.”

Petra’s fuel cells extract electrons directly from fuel to generate electricity. Goodman described that process as more direct than conventional generation, which converts fuel into heat, motion and then electrical power.

The company is working with neoclouds and other infrastructure providers, but does not yet have firm agreements with hyperscalers. First deployments with its data-center customers are targeted for 2028, followed by a goal of full-scale production in 2029.

Petra is also developing a defense application for auxiliary power on land vehicles. The system would provide electricity for onboard equipment while a vehicle’s main engine is off, reducing the need to run the engine solely to power those systems.

The fuel cells have not yet been deployed on a live vehicle. They remain in testing while the government evaluates whether to move forward with the application.

Petra has about 15 employees and has received nearly $9 million in Defense Department contracts. The company’s next stated milestones are its targeted 2028 data-center deployments and planned expansion toward full-scale production in 2029.
