> The chip is designed to improve AI throughput and reduce Microsoft’s long-term reliance on Nvidia GPUs while supporting large-scale data-center deployment.

Microsoft unveiled its third-generation Maia 300 AI accelerator on Oct. 12, setting a 2027 production target as it works to reduce long-term reliance on Nvidia GPUs.

Microsoft plans to deploy 96 Maia 300 chips in each data-center rack. The configuration is designed to deliver seven times more AI token throughput per rack and 40% higher token efficiency per megawatt than GPUs.

The company is targeting Maia clusters spanning multiple gigawatts, with Microsoft 365 Copilot expected to receive the first performance benefits. Maia accelerators will initially remain dedicated to Microsoft’s internal operations rather than being rented to outside customers.

Nvidia and AMD are expected to continue supporting Microsoft’s model-training workloads, leaving the new chips focused on Microsoft’s own AI infrastructure.
