OpenAI fired an employee and referred the case to the FBI after finding a hidden precision recording device at one of its offices, turning an internal security incident into a federal investigation.

The company said the device was installed several days earlier by the employee. OpenAI used its own models to analyze the device and identify its source before referring the matter to federal authorities.

The FBI arrested the employee, and the investigation remains ongoing. OpenAI said there was no indication that the individual improperly accessed or stole model weights, source code or customer data.

The next step is the continuing FBI investigation.
