> Amrita Ahuja said employees may help develop and deploy agents as companies reshape workforces and assess returns on AI spending.

Block Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer Amrita Ahuja said companies may add artificial intelligence agents to their organization charts as they reshape work and seek to justify AI spending.

At a summit in Santa Barbara, California, Ahuja said employees would help develop and deploy the agents. She described them as needing ongoing context, information and goals that may change over time.

Block has been restructuring its workforce as it expands the use of AI to automate workflows. Earlier this year, CEO Jack Dorsey laid off 40% of the company’s staff. Ahuja’s comments point to another possible change in organizational design: treating AI agents as units within a company’s work structure.

Executives at other companies discussed how they evaluate AI’s role and cost. Synopsys Chief Financial Officer Shelagh Glaser said investments should be deliberate, with tools suited to the needs of different users. She described the company as investing in AI while weighing how that spending supports its strategy and customers.

Cloudflare co-founder, President and board co-chair Michelle Zatlyn said AI agents can extend employees’ work. She also pointed to software that lets employees build tools and identify new uses for AI, saying promising builders can come from unexpected parts of a company.

Amazon Vice President of Customer Experience Products and Services Heather Zorn described a sequence for assessing workplace AI: measure adoption, then engagement, and then efficiency through outcomes such as time saved. She said revenue growth is the ultimate measure of the technology’s business value.

The remarks reflect several approaches to workplace AI: changing company structures, enabling employees to build with software, and measuring use and business outcomes. Ahuja said she had heard of a couple of companies already adding agents to their organization charts, though she did not identify them.
