> The October 2026 Beige Book describes delayed employment contracts in Dallas, lower staffing needs in some Cleveland roles and dampened job creation in Minneapolis.

The Federal Reserve’s October 2026 Beige Book describes AI-related efficiency gains shaping some hiring decisions, while employment increased modestly in Dallas and Cleveland and edged up in Minneapolis.

In Dallas, an accounting contact described some large firms delaying employment contracts because they expected to need fewer entry-level workers, partly due to AI-related efficiency gains. The district’s employment increased modestly.

Two banking contacts in Cleveland said automation and AI had improved productivity and reduced staffing needs in some roles. Employment in the district also increased modestly.

In Minneapolis, IT staffing contacts said AI was dampening the creation of new jobs but was not causing layoffs. Employment edged up, while job openings edged lower and remained healthy.

Philadelphia reported modest employment growth and increased manufacturing hiring. The district’s account also connected manufacturing growth partly to data centers and AI.

The Beige Book draws on anecdotal observations from business contacts across the Federal Reserve’s 12 districts. It gives no count of jobs affected by AI and does not estimate AI’s effect on national employment.
