A Ripple-operated validator has signaled support for Sponsor, a proposed XRP Ledger feature that lets one account cover another’s transaction costs, but the amendment remains 18 votes short of the threshold for its activation period.

At 5:05 a.m. ET (9:05 UTC) Thursday, Oct. 15, Sponsor had 11 yes votes among 35 trusted validators. It needs 29 votes to reach the threshold, which represents more than 80% of the validators heard.

Reaching 29 votes would start the required two-week support period. The amendment can activate only if support stays above 80% throughout those two weeks; if it falls below that level, the period starts over.

Sponsor, also known as XLS-68, would let an account cover another account’s transaction fees and reserve requirements. A sponsor could co-sign transactions or fund the sponsorship in advance. The sponsored user would keep control of the account and its keys, and the arrangement would not transfer XRP to that user’s wallet.

The vote reflects one participant in the XRP Ledger’s [broader validator system](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/29535>), where operators choose which validators they trust.

Sponsor entered validator voting with the xrpld 3.3.0 release on Aug. 6. A reserve-accounting vulnerability was reported Aug. 7 and publicly disclosed Sept. 21. The fix was included in xrpld 3.4.0, released Sept. 17. At the time of disclosure, Sponsor had not activated on Mainnet and no funds were at risk.
