> EIP-8061 would preserve the 256 Ether (ETH) per epoch limit on new stake while assigning separate capacity to validator exits and consolidations.

Ethereum’s EIP-8061 proposal would allow validators to exit and consolidate at higher rates while preserving the cap on new stake, leaving direct stakers subject to the existing activation pace.

The 256 ETH figure is a rate cap, not a maximum queue size. An epoch lasts six minutes and 24 seconds, making 57,600 ETH a theoretical daily activation total if every epoch uses its full allowance. The cap sets how quickly ETH can become active, not how much can wait in the Ethereum staking entry queue.

Exit processing would change on a different track from new stake. EIP-8061 would remove the fixed throughput cap for exits and give validator consolidations their own capacity. At 36 million ETH staked, its calculations estimate roughly four times current exit capacity and twice current consolidation capacity. The estimate is tied to that stated staking level. The proposal would increase capacity for exits without raising the amount of new stake that can activate each epoch.

A direct staker needs at least 32 ETH to run a validator, which begins earning native validator rewards after activation. The activation cap therefore affects how quickly a new direct staker’s ETH can start earning those rewards.

Pooled staking handles deposits differently. Lido issues stETH when a user deposits ETH, while some funds can remain in a buffer or await use as validator stake. Idle ETH does not earn native validator rewards on its own. Rewards from active validators are reflected across stETH holders’ shares, so more pooled capital waiting for activation can mean lower returns per unit.

The proposal’s security calculations also account for the higher exit capacity. At 36 million ETH staked, EIP-8061 estimates a weak-subjectivity period of about seven days, down from 15.7 days under current parameters. For an offline node, this is the time a recent trusted checkpoint can still help it reconnect safely.

EIP-8061 is in Last Call, with a review deadline of Nov. 1, 2026. That is not a mainnet activation date. Glamsterdam is expected in Q4 2026, but no mainnet activation date has been set.
