> The calculation covers only wallets that sent x402 transactions on at least two separate days. A separate Base count classified 21.20% of settlements as fictitious and 63.78% as internal to linked wallet clusters.

The share of qualifying x402 wallets that received a second deposit within 30 days reached 89.3% in the second quarter of 2026, highlighting faster repeat funding while leaving broader demand uncertain.

The rate compares with 70.6% for wallets first funded in the third quarter of 2025. The calculation includes only wallets that sent x402 transactions on at least two separate days, so it does not measure retention across all x402 wallets.

Other activity measures show that wallets began making payments sooner after funding. The median time from a wallet’s first funding to its first x402 payment fell from 73 days in late 2025 to 18 minutes in the third quarter of 2026. The share making a first payment within an hour rose from 4% in the third quarter of 2025 to 67% a year later.

Coinbase introduced x402 in May 2025 to let web services request stablecoin payments through HTTP. A service can return payment terms in a web response, after which a client can submit a payment and retry its request.

More than 87% of x402 payments in the 16 months ending September 2026 were between $0.0001 and $0.10, with $0.01 to $0.10 the most common range. More than 138 million x402 transactions had occurred on Base by July 1, 2026.

A separate 280-day count, from Sept. 17, 2025, through June 23, 2026, recorded 136,708,672 Base x402 settlements worth $44,121,383.81. The 138 million-plus figure and this count cover different time windows and use different counting rules, so they are not like-for-like totals.

Over those 280 days, 21.20% of settlements were classified as fictitious and 63.78% as internal to linked wallet clusters. Value demonstrably reaching a nameable service totaled $187,861.35. Up to $20,258,746.09, or 45.92% of the total, was not proven to be manufactured. Linked funding alone does not establish common control.

A June 2026 catalog check counted 25,163 listed Base resources corresponding to 811 distinct recipients; 249 recipients had earned at least $10 over their lifetimes. A second deposit does not show that a wallet’s first balance was depleted, identify whether a person or an AI agent controlled it, or establish a sale between independent businesses.

Will Su, BlackRock’s head of digital assets research, said AI agents are “potentially creating meaningful demand for frequent, low-value payments around the clock.”
