More than 60 Bitcoin (BTC), worth about $4.8 million, was stolen Oct. 9 from three Ledger-associated addresses that Chainalysis linked to a suspected task-scam operator. The addresses received the BTC on Sept. 22 before their balances were sent to a single wallet.

Chainalysis linked the funds to a task scam involving fake sales and product reviews. Participants were shown a supposed negative balance and asked to deposit money to cover it.

Ledger’s disclosure concerned a separate [hardware-implant incident](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/29764>). Ledger attributed the tampering to a criminal group that added concealed components to genuine devices after the units left its control. The incident did not compromise Ledger’s chip, operating system or servers.

Ledger is tightening reseller procedures by keeping stock off display and barring resale of returned devices.

Task scams can start with online work offers; scammers may initially pay $5 to $20 before demanding deposits, often in cryptocurrency, to unlock supposed earnings.
