> Mercor’s average pay was $110 an hour in October, but that figure and top job listings do not show how many assignments pay those rates or how many hours contractors receive.

Job listings for AI training work advertise contract rates of up to $400 an hour for civil rights attorneys, showing a high-end market that does not reveal how much steady work is available.

Listings for condensed-matter experts reach $170 an hour, while software engineer roles advertise as much as $120. Those are posted rates for specific openings, not evidence that workers routinely earn them. They describe what certain assignments offer at the top end, not a typical paycheck across the field.

Mercor’s average pay was $110 an hour in October 2026. That hourly figure does not show how many assignments paid that amount or how many hours contractors received. A high rate per hour and a reliable flow of paid hours are separate measures of income.

The work itself spans a broad range. Some assignments involve transcription or labeling objects in images. Others require reviewers to judge whether AI answers are sound in areas such as law or medicine. Contractors may also write scoring guides, often called “evals,” that train models and help assess their responses.

Individual experiences show the spread in work and earnings. One contractor who had done data work for years moved from transcription and marking objects in photos to more involved assignments, but still spent time searching across platforms for available projects. A radiologist took on data projects alongside medical work and earned in an hour an amount comparable to what the other worker made in a week.

Those cases are individual examples, not a pay survey. They also measure different things: weekly earnings in one case and an hourly amount in the other. The comparison illustrates varied outcomes but does not establish how common either pattern is or provide a like-for-like comparison of assignment pay.

For professionals, contract assignments offer a way to apply specialized judgment to AI projects. The available figures do not establish what share of the market consists of expert work or how consistently contractors can secure paid hours. High advertised rates alone provide limited evidence about the size or stability of this work.
