> The authentication startup plans to put chips in all 18 ATHLOS championship crowns. A phone tap to a chip-equipped LeBron James shoe brings up its history and story.

Veritas has introduced a second-generation authentication chip that works on metal and can be scanned through glass, expanding where brands can embed digital product records in goods from jewelry to fragrance bottles.

The chip is designed for insertion into products without damaging them. Each phone tap triggers a secure response, and a wire inside the chip detects tampering. Veritas founder Luci Holland, a former Tesla technical product manager with a background in design and art, called the new version “ready for production.” Holland has said copied QR codes or static NFC links can make digital records easier to reproduce. She said Veritas ties an item’s digital identity to the chip integrated into the physical product.

The second generation adds support for jewelry, trophies, other hard-surface goods and glass objects such as fragrance bottles. It extends the company’s existing garment integrations. Veritas says its chip helps brands verify goods and lets consumers access ownership certificates through its app. The company is targeting counterfeits in a luxury market where copied brand marks can make imitations look genuine.

Veritas announced this week that ATHLOS, a women’s track-and-field competition founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, will include chips in all 18 of its championship crowns. Ohanian is also an investor in Veritas. In a separate integration, Veritas embedded a chip in a pair of LeBron James’ first Nike shoes, reimagined by artist Adam Port. A phone tap opens details about the shoe’s history.

Veritas has shipped an iOS app for consumers and a portal for brands since its February fundraise. The app provides access to ownership certificates, while the portal lets businesses manage product records and create experiences for owners. Those experiences can include clubs, event check-ins and early access to product drops for selected customer groups.

The startup has raised $1.75 million in pre-seed funding led by Seven Seven Six, Ohanian’s venture firm. The round also included DoorDash co-founder Stanley Tang and Reys co-founder Gloria Zhu.
