> The method uses 90% fewer physical qubits to prepare magic states than earlier approaches. The figure does not apply to an entire quantum computer.

NVIDIA used 8,192 GPUs on Germany's JUPITER supercomputer to simulate a magic-state preparation protocol spanning 104 physical qubits, letting researchers test fault-tolerant computing under realistic hardware noise.

The qubit count includes data and auxiliary qubits used by the protocol. The run modeled their behavior on GPUs; it did not simulate an entire quantum processor or operate a physical quantum machine. JUPITER, at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, used GH200 hardware for the run.

Magic states are used in fault-tolerant quantum computation. The cultivation method uses 90% fewer physical qubits to prepare them than earlier approaches. That reduction applies to magic-state preparation, not to all the hardware a quantum computer would need.

The new run also differs from an earlier [JUPITER simulation of 50 qubits](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/35183>), which modeled ideal conditions without hardware noise. The two qubit counts describe different simulation tasks.

Researchers developed the new simulation on NVIDIA's GB200 NVL72 system, expanding tests from four GPUs to hundreds before running them on JUPITER. That work helped turn a weekslong simulation effort into one completed in days. Modeling noise gives researchers a way to examine errors and refine designs before building hardware.
