> Developers plan to decide Oct. 20 whether to activate the upgrade after its public testnet launch. Nov. 5 remains a tentative mainnet target.

Zcash developers are due to review the NU7 testnet run Oct. 20 and decide whether to activate the upgrade on mainnet, a move that would change confirmation timing and the use of transaction fees.

The [public testnet activation](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/26735>) occurred Oct. 4 at block 4,465,026, ahead of the original Oct. 6 schedule. Developers plan to use the test results to make the mainnet decision and select an activation block height.

NU7 would reduce the target interval between blocks to 25 seconds from 75 seconds. That would shorten the expected wait for a first confirmation, although actual block times can vary. Confirmation waits affect payments and exchange deposits.

The upgrade would place 60% of transaction fees in a reserve for future block rewards, while miners would receive the other 40%. It would preserve the halving schedule and the 21 million-coin supply cap on Zcash (ZEC). NU7 would also limit shielded activity per block.

NU7 would add no new transaction format, but it would make version 4 transactions invalid. Transfers from the older Sprout pool rely on that version, so funds remaining there would become unspendable if the upgrade activates. Full nodes, indexers and block explorers may need updates.

The Oct. 20 review will determine whether developers proceed with mainnet activation and set a block height. Nov. 5 remains the tentative activation date.
