> The Astra SR200 family ranges from 200 to 400 billion operations per second and includes Synaptics’ Torq AI engine and an open-source compiler for local AI workloads.

Synaptics introduced three Astra SR200 processors on Oct. 20, combining its Torq AI engine with Google Research’s Coral NPU architecture for devices that process voice, images and sensor data locally.

The target products include wearables, connected cameras and industrial systems. The processors are designed to handle those tasks on the device instead of sending each request to a remote server.

The SR210 is rated at 200 billion operations per second (GOPS) for always-on voice and sensing. The SR230 reaches 300 GOPS and adds vision and display support, while the SR250 is rated at 400 GOPS for more demanding workloads. Each rating applies to a distinct model in the family.

The processors combine Arm Cortex-M85 and Cortex-M52 cores with up to 8 megabytes of static random-access memory (SRAM). Custom dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) can extend capacity to hundreds of megabytes, giving device makers room to run larger models locally. The design is intended for models that work with voice, images and sensor inputs without routing every task to a remote server.

Synaptics’ open-source Torq compiler, built on MLIR and IREE, is designed to prepare models across the SR200 family. The compiler is Synaptics’ software for the processors; Google Research’s Coral NPU architecture is the open-source technology integrated into them.

The partnership also produced the earlier SL2610 line. Synaptics’ Torq NPU subsystem in that line was Coral NPU’s first production implementation. Google introduced Coral NPU as an open-source platform for edge AI in 2025.

“Open technologies and strong partnerships are key to making Edge AI more accessible,” said Yossi Matias, vice president and head of Google Research.

Synaptics also introduced Coralboard SR, a development board built around the SR250. Its Coralboard SL uses the earlier Astra SL2619 processor and a Torq NPU rated at one trillion operations per second (TOPS) that incorporates Coral technology. Coralboard SL became available to order through DigiKey on Oct. 20.
