> Customers may need V15 software and integration into Tesla’s geofenced service areas and fleet-management system. Tesla has not disclosed eligibility, enrollment or compensation terms.

Tesla is tentatively aiming for about Q2 2027 to bring the first customer-owned vehicles into its Robotaxi fleet, a step that would extend the service beyond cars Tesla operates itself. The target depends on software and fleet integration, while details for a wider owner program remain unannounced.

At Tesla’s Oct. 21 third-quarter earnings call, Ashok Elluswamy, the company’s director of AI, said Tesla plans to release V15 software to customers soon. “We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year,” Elluswamy said of when the first customer vehicles could join. The timing is an estimate for an initial set of cars, not a confirmed date for broad owner enrollment.

Elluswamy used a customer Model Y as an example of a vehicle that would need further preparation. For it to operate autonomously in the service, Tesla would first need to add the vehicle to its geofenced operating areas and fleet-management system. The remarks point to software and operational integration as prerequisites, but do not establish that every customer Model Y can participate.

Tesla has not disclosed how many customer vehicles could participate, which models or hardware would qualify, or where they could run. It has also not outlined an owner enrollment process, compensation or insurance arrangements. A potential program could let owners offer personal vehicles for Robotaxi service and share in resulting income, but no participation terms have been announced. That leaves owners without a stated way to request entry or estimate potential earnings.

The current customer-facing Full Self-Driving (Supervised) product still requires active driver supervision and does not make a vehicle autonomous. The Q2 2027 estimate does not say that V15 will change that status. It instead describes a path for integrating customer cars into the Robotaxi operation, with no stated date for wider availability.

By Sept. 30, cumulative unsupervised mileage logged by the Robotaxi fleet was close to 2 million miles, and Cybercab deployment in Austin had begun. Those milestones provide the operating context for the customer-car target, though they do not specify how many privately owned vehicles may eventually enter the fleet. The Q2 2027 estimate applies to the first customer cars; no broader rollout schedule was disclosed.
