> The Kansas district is using state grant funding for software that flags potential firearms in security-camera feeds for human review.

ZeroEyes deployed its AI firearm-detection system at Elkhart USD 218 in Kansas, with funding from the state’s Safe and Secure Firearm Detection Grant Program.

The software analyzes feeds from the district’s existing security cameras for potential firearms. Staff at ZeroEyes’ Operations Center review potential detections before alerts are sent.

Kansas’ program supports firearm-detection and screening technology in public schools. It has $10 million in funding, caps awards at $500,000 per district and distributes grants on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available funds and program requirements. State requirements include integrating the technology with school security cameras and using a monitored operations center.

Cole Parks, Elkhart USD 218’s IT director and athletic director, described the integration as “seamless” and the response time as “quick.”
