> Four companies will develop production methods for devices that combine photonics and electronics, with a pilot line planned for evaluation.

Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) selected a project involving four companies to develop optical chiplet manufacturing, targeting production efficiency more than 10 times that of current research-stage processes.

The project is part of a Japanese program to develop advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology. Its work will cover optical semiconductors, silicon photonics, optical interconnects, semiconductor packaging and mass-production methods. The participants plan to establish and evaluate a pilot production line.

NTT will serve as an adviser. NTT Innovative Devices will develop manufacturing, testing and packaging methods for optical chiplet production. Japan Semiconductor will work on silicon photonics technology for integrating different materials in optical chiplets.

Furukawa Electric will develop mass-production technology for compound-semiconductor optical devices. Shinko Electric Industries will work on packaging technology and production processes, including inspection during manufacturing.

The project focuses on photonics-electronics convergence (PEC), which uses optical technology for data transmission. NTT has led related work on packaging semiconductor chips connected by optical links since fiscal 2023.

Demand for generative AI and high-performance computing systems is increasing, along with power use for communication between chips. The project aims to develop lower-power data transmission for future AI computing systems.
