> The Iranian officials described a response plan tied to any new U.S. and Israeli attack that could also include covert military bases.

President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States may launch another limited “Epic Fury” operation against Iran, as two senior Iranian security officials described a contingency that could put Gulf undersea communications cables at risk.

The officials said the plan would be activated if the United States and Israel attacked Iran again. They described possible strikes on communications lines beneath Gulf waters and said the scope of retaliation could also include covert military bases.

Trump characterized a renewed operation as small-scale and said the war could end quickly. He framed the choice as either bringing the conflict to a complete close or letting hostilities gradually fade.

No attack on the cables has been reported. The Iranian officials' account describes a proposed response, while Trump's remarks leave a further U.S. operation as a possibility rather than a confirmed decision.

The competing statements keep shipping, energy and communications infrastructure in the Gulf in focus as military tension continues between Iran and the United States.
