> The 677 incidents were down 26% year over year, while estimated losses rose from $135.7 million. Cryptocurrency-mining hardware was among the targeted cargo types.

Cargo theft losses across the United States and Canada reached an estimated $304.6 million in Q2 2026 even as incidents fell, with organized groups targeting enterprise computing and cryptocurrency-mining hardware.

The tally recorded 677 incidents, down 26% from Q2 2025. Estimated losses rose from $135.7 million in Q2 2025 to $304.6 million in Q2 2026. The 2026 reporting window ran through July 27, and the figures cover all cargo categories.

Targeted goods included metals, enterprise-grade computing and networking equipment, and cryptocurrency-mining hardware.

Business email compromise remained a primary access point in sophisticated cargo-theft schemes. One fraud pattern involves criminals compromising freight broker or carrier accounts, posting fraudulent loads and redirecting real shipments to accomplices for resale. Phishing links are also used in these schemes.

Keith Lewis, vice president of operations, said, “The groups driving the largest losses are not necessarily trying to steal more freight; they are trying to identify the right shipment.”
