> The incidents include exposure of personal and credit information belonging to 38,490 Daishin Securities customers. Bithumb is checking whether member information was also affected.

South Korea’s National Office of Investigation opened a preliminary inquiry into hacks involving securities firms and crypto exchange Bithumb, as investigators assess whether two incidents may share a perpetrator.

A task force that previously investigated a series of financial-sector hacks is handling the inquiry. The recent intrusions involved Daishin Securities, Mirae Asset’s asset-management business and Bithumb.

Personal and credit information belonging to 38,490 Daishin Securities customers was exposed. Bithumb confirmed that employee information had been exposed and is checking whether member information was also involved.

Mirae Asset’s asset-management business said information tied to some business systems was exposed and that it had found no personal credit information among the exposed data.

Investigators are comparing methods used in two incidents to assess whether they are connected. They have not ruled out the possibility that one person was responsible.

Earlier hacks at 16 financial institutions, including KB Kookmin Bank, exposed about 100,000 personal records containing identity numbers, account numbers and addresses.
