> The proposed transaction would shift the reserve burden to a sponsor while leaving the network requirement intact. The broader Sponsor amendment has not activated on mainnet.

An XRP Ledger proposal would let sponsors create accounts with no XRP balance, so users could avoid funding the account reserve themselves while the reserve obligation remains in place.

Filed Oct. 15, the open implementation proposal would add a transaction called SponsoredAccountCreate. It could create a new account with a zero XRP balance and establish a sponsorship object for that account. The proposed code is gated by SponsorV1_1, linking it to the broader sponsorship framework.

XRPL’s mainnet base reserve is 1 XRP, with another 0.2 XRP required for each item an account owns. Under the sponsorship design, the reserve stays with the sponsor rather than moving into the new account. The reserve obligation would therefore remain; the change would let a sponsor meet it on a user’s behalf. The sponsored account’s owner would retain control of its keys.

The broader sponsorship rules can also let one account cover another’s transaction fees. The zero-balance proposal would change account creation within that framework. It remains under review, and the broader Sponsor amendment has not activated on mainnet.

At 7:20 a.m. ET (11:20 UTC) Oct. 28, 33 of XRPL’s 35 trusted validators had been heard in a roll call; 10 had voted yes on the amendment. The threshold for that round was 27 yes votes. With all 35 validators counted, 29 votes are required. The different thresholds reflect the different validator counts, and 10 affirmative votes fell short of both.

XRPL amendments must maintain support from more than 80% of trusted validators for two weeks before activation. If support drops below that level, the two-week period restarts. The implementation proposal remains open with two unresolved automated review findings, including one about zero-destination accounts and another about cleanup of consumed-ticket transaction proposals.
