> Existing .eth names can be renewed without migration. Eligible addresses must upgrade every qualifying name before revealing a commemorative NFT.

ENS Labs activated the [ENSv2 mainnet upgrade](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/42123>) on Ethereum Oct. 27, moving new .eth registrations and name resolution to the updated system as annual fees rose for names with five or more characters.

Under the new schedule, registration for a .eth name with five or more characters costs $8 a year, up from $5. The yearly rate remains $640 for three-character names and $160 for four-character names. ENSv2 includes discounts for registrations and renewals covering multiple years. The expiration grace period contracts from 90 days to 28; a migrating name gets a 62-day adjustment to its expiration date.

The ENS DAO vote that authorized activation cleared the one million-vote quorum. The proposal drew about 1.69 million in favor and 24.94 against, then was executed Oct. 27. New registrations and name resolution now run through ENSv2. Owners can leave existing names where they are and renew them, with no migration deadline.

Eligible addresses can reveal a commemorative NFT based on a June 1, 2026, snapshot. Each eligible address can get one collectible and must upgrade every qualifying name it holds before revealing the card. Expired names and names that cannot migrate do not prevent the reveal. Minting is optional and requires an Ethereum transaction fee.

ENSv2 replaces the system’s flat registry with a hierarchy in which each name can have a registry for subnames. Role-based permissions let namespace owners delegate control over parts of that structure. A community can issue names to members while giving a manager authority over only a selected section; an organization can assign specific administrative tasks without handing over its whole namespace.

The redesigned ENS App supports upgrades, while ENS Explorer displays a name’s history, ownership, resolution and configuration. ENS launched in 2017 to give people readable names such as alice.eth for use with Ethereum accounts. The ecosystem spans more than 36 million names across .eth and other namespaces, with more than 600 apps supporting resolution.
