Generative artist BitArt says he plans to adapt Mosaic, a work built from Bitcoin (BTC) transaction data, for the main-stage LED screens at Bitcoin Amsterdam.

Each satoshi is one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin. Participants’ selected amounts and the mix of unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) in their transactions shape the visuals. A UTXO is an output that can later be spent as an input in another transaction. Separately, sat ranges map to musical qualities such as tempo, rhythm, harmony and density.

Mosaic is inscribed on Bitcoin’s base layer. Ordinal theory assigns individual identities to satoshis so they can be tracked, while inscriptions can attach digital content to them. The artwork’s visuals and music emerge when rules are applied to Bitcoin data.

BitArt describes the algorithm as deterministic: He sets the interpretive rules, while the data determines the results. “The distinction between collecting and creating becomes less clear,” he said.

At the time of BitArt’s interview, Mosaic contained more than 127 million tiles and more than 1 billion layers. He said viewing every layer for one second would take more than 30 years.

The project’s transaction-based visuals and music are part of the same data-driven format. BitArt’s planned screen presentation is set for Nov. 5-6 at Bitcoin Amsterdam.
