> After about three weeks of subsystem checks, the satellite used its onboard Gemma 4 model to generate a space-themed haiku.

Google’s Project Suncatcher prototype has answered its first ground prompt in orbit, demonstrating an AI response from an onboard model during an early orbital-computing test.

Engineers sent a request for a space-themed haiku this week. Google DeepMind’s Gemma 4 replied: “Blue marble below / Data streams in silent grace / Starlight feeds my core.”

The satellite launched Oct. 1 on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. It carries four Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), Google’s AI chips, but can operate only one at a time for about 20 minutes. The satellite generates up to 1 kilowatt of electricity.

The prompt followed about three weeks of subsystem checks. The satellite’s arrival in orbit and the start of hardware testing were covered in [earlier hardware-test coverage](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/26257>).

An ongoing campaign will assess TPU performance under thermal stress and radiation. If the chips prove capable, Google’s next step is to launch two more satellites in 2027 to support greater power generation and demonstrate optical links between spacecraft.
