Anthropic opened applications for a paid AI safety research residency, offering experienced technical workers placements of up to six months and considering applicants without machine-learning backgrounds, doctorates or published papers. The program offers annualized compensation of $350,000 to $500,000, prorated for the placement’s duration. Applicants have until Nov. 22 to apply, and Anthropic expects to send offers in January 2027. Research areas include AI safety and alignment, scalable oversight, interpretability, AI security and red-teaming, machine-learning systems, and reinforcement learning. Residents will receive mentorship and access to Claude models and GPU computing. Anthropic is seeking candidates such as professors in quantitative disciplines, technical founders and staff-level engineers. Physics, mathematics and neuroscience are among the backgrounds it identifies as relevant. The residency offers placements of six weeks, three months or six months. Shorter placements may be remote, while longer ones may require residents to work in San Francisco. Anthropic will sponsor visas for placements lasting at least three months.
