> The planned park would support preparations for a future wafer fab, but the council chairman did not name TSMC in the reported remarks.

Taiwan plans to begin development procedures in 2027 for a planned new park in the Tainan Science Park system to prepare for a future one-nanometer fab, National Science and Technology Council Chairman 吳誠文 said Monday, Nov. 2.

The plan was outlined at the 2026 IEEE Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference. In the reported remarks, 吳誠文 did not name TSMC as the operator of a future fab.

More advanced production will require further process advances, along with land, electricity, water and supply-chain support, he said. The planning comes as TSMC’s two-nanometer process enters mass production.

吳誠文 also described robotics and optical communications as potential drivers of industrial transformation. Businesses in the metal, plastics, chemicals and materials industries could move toward higher-value technology uses, he said. For example, metal used in ordinary hardware could become a component for robots, potentially increasing company profits and worker wages.

The government plans to expand AI computing infrastructure and put more tax revenue from high-tech industries toward upgrades in other industries. Taiwan’s 2027 budget is expected to reflect that approach, with the added computing resources intended to give traditional businesses access to AI tools.
