> The upgrade lowers the scheduled subsidy per block and invalidates version 4 transactions. Exchanges and merchants still set their own deposit-credit policies.

Zcash (ZEC) activated its NU7 network upgrade at block 3,543,405, reducing the target interval between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 and changing how the protocol distributes subsidies and transaction fees. The block is timestamped Thursday, Nov. 5, at 9:34 p.m. ET (02:34 UTC Nov. 6).

The new target sets an expected average wait of 25 seconds for a first confirmation, but it does not guarantee that timing for an individual transaction. Exchanges and merchants set their own confirmation requirements and deposit-credit policies, so the shorter interval does not determine when a user can trade or spend a deposit.

In the current halving period, the scheduled subsidy falls to 0.52083333 ZEC per block from 1.5625 ZEC. At the new target cadence, the network is designed for 3,456 blocks per day, compared with 1,152 before the change. The lower subsidy roughly preserves scheduled issuance over time, though rounding makes it slightly lower than under the previous schedule.

Miners receive 40% of transaction fees. The other 60% is removed from circulation through the Network Sustainability Mechanism and is scheduled to begin returning through future block subsidies at block 8,939,664. The 40% miner share and reserve were part of the [NU7 fee plan before mainnet activation](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/technology/26735>). The fee split alone does not establish miners’ net revenue, which also depends on realized fees and block production.

NU7 invalidates version 4 transactions while leaving versions 5 and 6 valid. Because Sprout transfers require version 4, any funds remaining in Zcash’s legacy Sprout pool become unspendable. The protocol changes also limit shielded activity per block.

The upgrade’s design estimates put worst-case light-wallet synchronization at 169.10 megabytes per day, down from about 270.5 megabytes under the previous rules. Those are estimates, not measured results from network activity after activation.
