> Microsoft lists Paint version 11.2605.91.0 as fixed for CVE-2026-83844, but administrators said the Store kept offering version 11.2605.81.0.

Some Windows 11 administrators said the Microsoft Store continued supplying an older Paint version, complicating access to Microsoft's fix for a flaw with a CVSS score of 8.1 out of 10.

Microsoft says it corrected CVE-2026-83844, an out-of-bounds read that can enable remote code execution if someone opens a specially altered image in Paint. The attack requires a person to open the image; it does not run automatically.

Microsoft published details of the vulnerability Oct. 13 and lists Paint version 11.2605.91.0 as the fixed release. Administrators said the Store continued offering version 11.2605.81.0. Some users said manual update checks failed. Others said using WSReset to reset the Store cache did not get them the updated app.

Administrators can check the installed package version in PowerShell with Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Paint | Select-Object Name, Version. They can also prevent Paint from opening images from external sources or disable the app if it is not needed.
