> The Winter 2027 round closes Dec. 1, with awarded compute time available Jan. 1. Requests will be evaluated quarterly on merit.

The University of Utah will open project applications Monday for compute time on its Redtail AI Factory, beginning the Winter 2027 allocation round for a system serving users across the state.

Applications are due Dec. 1. Selected projects can start using their allocations Jan. 1, 2027. The university’s Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) will assess requests quarterly and award access based on merit.

Applicants must be CHPC principal investigators. Each request must be tied to a specific project rather than a research group.

CHPC operates Redtail for users that include Utah higher education institutions, state organizations and commercial users. The system is backed by $50 million in public and private investment over five years. General open access is not planned; access is available through selected challenge projects or the regular allocation process.

Redtail’s formal launch took place Oct. 6. Its initial cohort includes 21 projects selected through a competitive process.

“It started with recognizing that infrastructure is so critical to AI and to ensuring our leadership in AI,” Manish Parashar, the university’s chief AI officer, said at the launch.
