> The University of Sydney has scheduled general access for Semester 1 of 2027, while La Trobe is adding assessment-specific AI rules.

Three Australian universities are expanding access to OpenAI's ChatGPT Edu on different schedules, while La Trobe University is setting assessment rules as access expands into 2027.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) partnered with OpenAI in September 2026 to provide ChatGPT Edu to more than 80,000 students and staff. Broader availability is planned before the 2027 academic year.

The University of Sydney announced free, supported access on Sept. 14, 2026, and began a student pilot in October. General access is scheduled for Semester 1 of 2027. The announcement also referenced a $1 million AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund. The university continues to use Cogniti for personalized tutoring and feedback.

La Trobe University currently offers ChatGPT Edu to 3,500 staff members and plans to extend access to its 45,000-person community in early 2027. It assigns AI-permission levels to assessments and requires students to acknowledge AI use on unsupervised tasks.

ChatGPT Edu launched on May 30, 2024, initially powered by GPT-4o. Its features include shared custom GPTs, higher message limits than ChatGPT Free, and administrative controls such as single sign-on and group permissions. The tools are designed to support collaborative learning, brainstorming and data analysis.
