> IBM plans to move the system to an Illinois park where a National Quantum Algorithm Center is planned.

IBM activated its most advanced quantum computer at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park on Nov. 6, adding a 120-qubit system to the company's broader Illinois quantum-computing plan.

The IBM Quantum System Two runs on a Nighthawk r2 processor. The Nighthawk architecture uses a square-lattice layout that improves connectivity and delivers about 30% greater circuit complexity than IBM's previous Heron-class processors. The company is targeting quantum advantage by the end of 2026.

The deployment is part of a broader plan tied to IBM's December 2024 partnership with the State of Illinois. A National Quantum Algorithm Center is planned for the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, which is under construction at the former U.S. Steel South Works site. IBM plans to move System Two to the park.

IBM also plans a FutureNow Chicago delivery center at the park, expected to generate 750 full-time technology jobs.
