Indian information technology services giant Wipro has joined the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA) in order to drive blockchain adoption in the transportation industry.
Founded in August of 2017, BiTA aims to establish blockchain standards for the freight industry. Members include FedEx, SAP, UPS, Salesforce, GE Transportation, and Schneider, among others.
BiTA provides a platform to develop and adopt common frameworks and standards using which industry participants can build innovative blockchain applications. With its membership, Wipro plans to leverage the platform to help ideate platform-agnostic blockchain standards for the logistics and transportation industry.
“We will collaborate with BiTA and our customers to take a business use-case approach and leverage blockchain to solve complex new-age logistics and transportation issues,” Srini Pallia, President, Consumer Business Unit, Wipro Limited said. “We also look forward to actively contributing to the standards for the use of blockchain in the transportation and logistics industry, and working closely with our global customers to bring these standards to action in their blockchain journey.”
Wipro has been actively involved in the blockchain space for the past couple of years. It established a blockchain research facility in Bengaluru, India back in 2016 to develop software applications using the technology.
In May 2017, it announced the launch of nine blockchain-based solutions for the Banking Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI), Manufacturing, Retail and Consumer Goods industries. It has also partnered with enterprise application software provider SAP to develop blockchain use cases for the utilities industry.
Wipro also holds membership of other leading blockchain-focused consortiums and initiatives, including the Hyperledger blockchain project and the Energy Web Foundation (EWF).
