Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Holdings to $2 Billion with Latest Purchase

Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Holdings to $2 Billion with Latest Purchase.

Metaplanet Inc. (TYO:3350) has boosted its Bitcoin holdings with the purchase of an additional 463 BTC, raising its total stash to 17,595 coins. The Japanese hotelier-turned-treasury company said on Monday that it acquired the latest batch at an average price of 17,268,320 yen (about $116,975) per Bitcoin, according to a regulatory filing.

At current market prices, Metaplanet’s Bitcoin reserves are valued at roughly $2 billion, securing its position as the world’s seventh-largest corporate Bitcoin holder. It trails companies such as Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. (NASDAQ:DJT) and market leader MicroStrategy Incorporated (NASDAQ:MSTR), which pioneered the aggressive Bitcoin-as-treasury strategy that Metaplanet has adopted since pivoting to this model in 2024.

The company’s latest accumulation comes just days after it announced plans to raise 540 billion yen (approximately $3.7 billion) via a stock offering to further expand its Bitcoin position. This move aligns with its long-term strategy of leveraging capital markets to build one of the largest Bitcoin treasuries globally, echoing MicroStrategy’s high-profile playbook.

Metaplanet’s aggressive accumulation strategy underscores the growing trend of publicly listed companies integrating Bitcoin into their balance sheets as a hedge against currency debasement and as a strategic reserve asset. Analysts say the firm’s latest purchase reflects both a strong conviction in Bitcoin’s long-term value and a calculated bet on the cryptocurrency’s role in corporate finance.

On Monday, Bitcoin traded slightly higher at $114,471, extending its recent gains amid heightened institutional demand and increasing corporate adoption worldwide. With its expanding war chest and upcoming capital raise, Metaplanet appears set to further solidify its standing among the top global corporate Bitcoin holders.
