BlackRock's head of digital assets, Robbie Mitchnick, made a striking case at the Digital Asset Summit in New York — arguing that artificial intelligence, not the proliferation of new tokens, is the most powerful force shaping the future of cryptocurrency.
Mitchnick noted that token turnover among top digital assets has been rapid and unforgiving, with only Bitcoin and Ethereum sustaining long-term investor relevance. He was blunt about the broader token landscape, suggesting that the overwhelming majority of circulating tokens lack staying power. This shift in market dynamics has pushed institutional clients toward narrow, concentrated allocations rather than diversified crypto portfolios.
Rather than viewing this consolidation as a setback, Mitchnick framed it as a natural evolution — one increasingly influenced by the rise of AI. He described a compelling convergence between the two technologies, positioning crypto as the financial backbone that AI systems will naturally gravitate toward. Traditional payment rails like Fedwire and SWIFT, he argued, are ill-suited for AI-native transactions. Crypto, by contrast, is computer-native money designed for exactly the kind of autonomous, machine-driven economy that AI is building.
This perspective is already reshaping business strategies across the industry. Bitcoin miners such as Hut 8, Core Scientific, and Iren are repurposing data centers and entering hosting agreements tied to AI and high-performance computing, drawn by more predictable revenue streams and surging demand for processing power.
Mitchnick also highlighted Bitcoin's potential as a strategic hedge during periods of rapid technological disruption. As AI accelerates structural change across industries, Bitcoin could serve as a stabilizing asset for investors navigating that uncertainty. For BlackRock and its clients, the message is clear — the most compelling crypto opportunity lies not in chasing new tokens, but in recognizing where digital assets and artificial intelligence meaningfully converge.
