Bitcoin Hedge Funds Turn Net Long on CME as Institutional Bullish Bets Grow

Bitcoin Hedge Funds Turn Net Long on CME as Institutional Bullish Bets Grow.

Hedge funds trading Bitcoin (BTC) futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) have shifted to a net-long position, signaling a notable change in institutional sentiment toward the cryptocurrency market.

CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju highlighted the positioning change, describing it as unusual after years in which leveraged funds maintained structural short exposure to CME Bitcoin futures. The shift suggests professional traders may increasingly expect Bitcoin prices to rise rather than simply using futures as part of market-neutral strategies.

Historically, hedge funds have been net short Bitcoin futures largely because of the popular basis trade. Under this strategy, traders buy spot Bitcoin or Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) while selling CME futures. Returns are generated from the difference between spot and futures prices as the premium narrows, allowing investors to potentially profit without making a directional bet on Bitcoin.

That strategy has become less appealing as Bitcoin futures yields decline. The annualized three-month Bitcoin futures basis has dropped to roughly 3%, compared with an approximately 3.8% yield on two-year U.S. Treasury notes. With Treasury securities offering higher yields and the Bitcoin basis trade carrying funding, margin and execution risks, hedge funds have less incentive to maintain large futures short positions.

Bitcoin's recent price recovery adds significance to the change in CME positioning. BTC has climbed back above $65,000 after falling to around $58,000 on July 1, strengthening expectations that the cryptocurrency could be entering a more constructive phase.

Part of the net-long shift may simply reflect hedge funds unwinding existing basis trades and closing futures shorts. However, leveraged funds moving into positive territory means their aggregate CME Bitcoin futures long positions now exceed their shorts.

That development could represent an important bullish signal for Bitcoin. If institutional investors continue increasing directional long exposure while the basis trade loses its appeal, CME futures positioning may provide further evidence that professional traders are becoming more confident in Bitcoin's upside potential.
