Drift Protocol Faces Backlash After $285M Hack Amid Suspicious Token Movements

Solana-based perpetual futures exchange Drift Protocol is under intense community scrutiny following a devastating $285 million exploit and a series of controversial moves by insiders during the crisis.

Blockchain analytics platform Onchain Lens flagged a wallet tied to the Drift team that deposited 56.25 million DRIFT tokens — worth approximately $2.44 million — into centralized exchanges Bybit and Gate shortly after the attack. Transfers of this kind are widely viewed as precursors to selling, and the timing has deepened user distrust. The DRIFT token subsequently plunged to an all-time low of $0.03343, compounding an already severe liquidity crisis for the protocol.

The breach itself occurred on April 1, when North Korean-linked hackers drained roughly $280 million from the platform. Drift's total value locked collapsed from $550 million to approximately $230 million, and the ripple effects have since touched at least 20 other connected projects. The incident now stands as the largest DeFi hack of 2026 and the second-largest exploit in Solana's history, trailing only the $326 million Wormhole attack in 2022.

In response to the fallout, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko proposed a recovery path inspired by the 2016 Bitfinex hack, suggesting Drift could issue IOU tokens to eventually compensate affected users. However, analysts have been quick to highlight critical differences between the two cases. Bitfinex operated as a dominant centralized exchange with strong fee revenue during a bull market, giving it the financial foundation to gradually redeem its debt tokens. Drift, operating as a decentralized exchange in a highly fragmented market, lacks that predictable revenue stream. Critics warn that without a solvent protocol and a credible repayment plan, any IOU issuance would amount to little more than speculative paper.

The community continues to watch closely as Drift navigates one of the most damaging crises in recent DeFi history.
